What Medical Weight Loss in Atlanta Involves (and What to Expect)

Medical weight loss is the treatment of obesity and excess weight using evidence based lifestyle interventions, clinician guided behavioral strategies, and, when appropriate, prescription medications. The goal is sustainable improvement in metabolic health, body composition, and long term function.

If you have tried plan after plan and felt let down, what follows is what a clinical approach actually involves.

What Makes Medical Weight Loss Different

Obesity is a chronic medical condition. It responds to individualized evaluation and treatment, the same as any other chronic condition, and nutrition remains the foundation of that treatment.

What a clinical setting adds is the ability to work out what is specifically getting in the way for you. That may be appetite regulation, hormones, sleep, stress, other conditions, or medications you already take that promote weight gain. It also adds tools a program cannot offer on its own, including GLP-1 medications for appropriate patients, which can meaningfully improve adherence for people who have struggled to manage appetite without adequate medical support.

Why a Sports Medicine Practice Approaches This Differently

Most weight loss clinics optimize for the number on the scale. We do not, and the difference matters.

Our concern is what you are made of at the end. Preserving muscle. Improving how you move. Reducing load on painful joints. Maintaining function and strength. A patient who loses thirty pounds and half of it is lean mass has a worse outcome than one who loses twenty and keeps their muscle, even though the scale disagrees.

That framing changes what we measure, what we prescribe, and what we ask of you.

Your First Visit: History First

We start with a thorough history, not a stack of tests.

We ask about your health, chronic conditions, family history, prior weight loss attempts and what happened with them, exercise history, nutritional habits, sleep quality, stress, medications associated with weight gain, and your body composition.

We do not run labs on every patient by default. Baseline laboratory evaluation is appropriate for many patients depending on age, medications, and existing conditions, and where it will guide your care we recommend it and explain why. It is not a reflex, and it is not rare either.

Building a Plan That Fits You

Once we understand your history, we work out what a suitable plan looks like. That may include nutrition guidance, movement that fits your body and schedule, habit support, and, where appropriate, medication.

We emphasize adequate protein intake, resistance exercise, and monitoring of lean body mass throughout treatment. That is what protects strength and energy while body fat comes down.

Not every patient is an appropriate candidate for medication. Certain conditions make it inappropriate and call for a different approach, and we will tell you plainly if that is your situation.

What We Measure

More than your weight.

Body composition through InBody analysis. Waist circumference. Metabolic markers where indicated. Strength and functional improvement. How your energy and your sleep are actually doing.

Sustainable weight loss also improves other conditions in appropriate patients, including hypertension, sleep apnea, prediabetes, osteoarthritis symptoms, and fatty liver disease. Those improvements matter more than a number, and they show up in places the scale never looks.

Healthy weight loss varies between individuals. We are aiming at sustainable progress, not rapid reduction.

What to Expect Week to Week

Medical weight loss is a relationship, not an appointment. You can expect regular follow up where we review how you feel, how your appetite and energy are responding, what your body composition is doing, and whether anything needs adjusting.

If you are on a medication, we monitor tolerance and adjust thoughtfully. If something is not working, we change it.

Sleep, stress management, nutrition, and physical activity remain essential components even when medication is part of the plan. The medication does not replace them.

Maintenance

Most patients want to know whether they will be on medication forever. It is a fair question and it deserves an answer at the start rather than at the end.

Because obesity is a chronic condition, we discuss long term maintenance planning from the beginning. What the plan looks like if medication is reduced. What holds progress in place. What we watch for.

Who Leads Your Care at Paragon

Weight loss care at Paragon is led by Jordan Carney, CRNP, who oversees this program and stays involved as your plan evolves.

We are a sports medicine and performance minded practice in Atlanta. Strength, energy, function, and quality of life are what we are actually treating. Weight is one component of that.

Frequently asked questions

What is medical weight loss?

Medical weight loss is the treatment of obesity and excess weight using evidence based lifestyle interventions, clinician guided strategies, and, when appropriate, prescription medications. The goal is sustainable improvement in metabolic health, body composition, and long term function rather than rapid weight reduction.

Do you run bloodwork at the first visit?

Not automatically. We start with a thorough history. Baseline laboratory evaluation is appropriate for many patients depending on age, medications, and existing conditions, and we recommend it where it will guide your care.

Is everyone a candidate for weight loss medication?

No. Certain medical conditions make these medications inappropriate, and some patients are better served by other approaches. Medication selection depends on your history, contraindications, insurance coverage, and a shared decision between you and your clinician.

How do you measure progress?

Body composition, waist circumference, metabolic markers where indicated, strength, function, energy, and symptoms, alongside weight. Preserving lean muscle while reducing body fat is the goal, and body weight alone cannot tell us whether that is happening.

How long does medical weight loss take?

Sustainable change is gradual. Many patients notice appetite and energy shifts early, with progress building over months. Healthy weight loss varies considerably between individuals, and your clinician will set realistic expectations against your starting point.
