Signs You May Benefit From PRP Knee Injection
Do any of these sound familiar?
PRP is most useful for specific knee conditions in carefully selected patients. Common reasons for referral include:
✓
Persistent knee pain that has not improved with rest, activity modification, or physical therapy
✓
Imaging diagnosed early or moderate knee osteoarthritis
✓
Meniscus irritation or partial meniscus tears not requiring surgery
✓
Patellar tendinopathy, sometimes called jumper's knee
✓
Iliotibial band irritation and chronic lateral knee pain
✓
Knee pain following an injury that has plateaued in recovery
✓
Active adults wanting to delay or avoid surgery
✓
Reduced response to corticosteroid injections
✓
Knee pain affecting sleep, work, or training
✓
Interest in non surgical regenerative options before considering arthroscopy or replacement
A thorough clinical and imaging based evaluation is required before any procedure is scheduled. Not every knee is a good candidate for PRP.
PRP Is a Tool, Not a Universal Answer
PRP works best when the structural problem is the right size for the tool. The four areas below summarize where PRP knee injection is most often considered at Paragon. Every decision is made from imaging, exam, and clinical history.

PRP is not a treatment for any condition listed above. It is one tool inside a broader plan. Dr. Garten evaluates your full clinical picture before recommending PRP, another regenerative option, structured rehabilitation, or surgical referral.
Our approach for PRP Knee Injection at Paragon
PRP is most effective when the right candidate, the right structure, and the right placement come together. Every step below is built around that. For more advanced cartilage and tendon cases, we also offer BMAC therapy as a more cellular option.
CLINICAL EVALUATION AND IMAGING
Detailed history, exam, and review of any prior MRI or imaging. Where appropriate, real time musculoskeletal ultrasound is performed in clinic.
CANDIDACY DECISION
PRP is not the right answer for every knee. Severe bone on bone osteoarthritis or large structural tears often respond better to other interventions. Where PRP is the right tool, we explain why.
ULTRASOUND GUIDED INJECTION
The procedure is performed in office. Blood draw, processing, and injection in one visit. PRP is delivered precisely to the targeted structure under ultrasound guidance.
STRUCTURED RECOVERY
Activity modification, follow up timing, and integrated rehabilitation guidance. Most patients need only a brief period of relative rest before returning to baseline activity.
When PRP Knee Injection May Not Be Appropriate
PRP is not right for every patient or every knee, and careful screening is part of our process. Treatment is typically deferred or declined in the following situations:
✓
Active infection at the planned injection site or systemic infection
✓
Active blood disorder or significant platelet dysfunction
✓
Active cancer treatment without medical clearance
✓
Severe bone on bone osteoarthritis where PRP is unlikely to help, with other options discussed
✓
Large complete meniscus or ligament tears requiring surgical management
✓
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
PRP Knee Injection in Atlanta:
What Patients Ask Us
Most patients describe mild discomfort during the injection and soreness for 24 to 72 hours afterward as the regenerative response begins. Many patients return to light activity the next day.
Initial improvement often appears at 4 to 6 weeks. Most studies show continued improvement at 3 and 6 months. Some patients benefit from a second injection at 6 to 12 weeks based on response.
For mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, PRP outperforms cortisone at 6 and 12 months in published trials. Cortisone provides faster initial relief but typically does not last and may damage cartilage over time.
Effects commonly last 9 to 18 months in appropriate candidates. Some patients elect a maintenance injection annually. Severe degenerative change responds less reliably.
Most insurance plans do not currently cover PRP. We provide detailed cost information at consultation. Pricing depends on your individual protocol and is reviewed in writing before any treatment is scheduled.
